Thankful

In a day and age of instant gratification it has become increasingly easier to focus on the negatives of a situation.  Optimism is a struggling weed in a forest of pessimism and reality.  I've never been an optimistic person, not in the broad sense, but I feel I'm more of a realist.  However, in light of my current place in the universe I find myself bubbling with thankfulness for so many things.  I'm thankful we have a roof over our heads, food on the table, able to pay our bills (mostly anyway,) have a healthy wonderful baby boy and are fairly healthy ourselves.  We have two cars, a barn full of animals and a home full of furry critters as well.  I get to knit from our own animals and I have a laundry room in my basement.  I'm thankful that we have a king size bed and that I have a walk-in closet.  I'm thankful for the peace on our property and that 2 out of 3 of our neighbors we love.  I'm thankful I'm in the mountains of Maine where you can see the stars at night and breathe fresh air.  I'm thankful I can take a nature walk whenever I want to and it is a true nature walk and not a groomed trail (although those are very nice too and certainly have their place.)  I'm thankful for a lot of things, vastly more things than I'm regretful for in truth.  I do regret being so far from my family.  That is probably the biggest one.  Will I ever be closer to them?  Probably not, unless they move up here, but hopefully in the future I can travel to them more often.

It is so very easy for me to be shaded in the canopy of pessimism (I'm a realist damnit!) that sometimes it is nice to walk out into the sunny glade of optimism.  Even if it is forced in the beginning, it isn't an uncomfortable sweater to wear.
